Local search and Google Business Profile

Local search puts your company in Google's map results and local listings for the towns you want to work in. It is the slowest service to build and often the cheapest per job once it works.

Local search is the work that makes your company appear when someone nearby searches for your trade, especially in the map results at the top of Google. For most trades it is the largest source of free, high-intent calls. It rewards patience and accuracy more than cleverness, and it's the service where a cheap shortcut most often causes lasting damage.

What local search actually involves

It means making Google confident that you are a real, active, well-reviewed company that serves a specific area. The main pieces:

  • Google Business Profile. Correct categories, a defined service area, hours, services, photos of real jobs and regular posts.
  • Service and area pages on your website, so Google has a page to match each search to.
  • Citations. Your company name, phone and website listed consistently in directories and trade associations.
  • Reviews, which feed directly into map rankings; see reviews and reputation.
  • Local content. Pages and posts about real jobs in real neighbourhoods.

Who it is for

Every trades company with a physical base benefits, but it matters most for companies that rely on repeat local demand: plumbers, electricians, HVAC, roofers, landscapers and handyman services. Companies that work mainly on large commercial bids still need a clean profile, but they win work more through relationships than through map results.

What is included

  1. Audit. Where you appear today for your top services in your top towns, compared with the competitors you lose jobs to.
  2. Profile clean-up. Categories, service area, duplicate listings, wrong phone numbers.
  3. Page plan. Which service and area pages your website needs, and which it should merge or remove.
  4. Citation clean-up, starting with the directories that matter in your province.
  5. Monthly activity. Photos, posts, review requests and page improvements.

Timeline

Fixing a broken profile often produces visible change within the first month. Building rank in a competitive city takes longer, often several months of consistent work. In smaller towns with fewer competitors it can happen faster. We'll tell you at the start which situation you're in.

How results are measured

We track local search on actions, not vanity metrics:

  • Calls, website clicks and direction requests from your Google Business Profile.
  • Map-result visibility for a fixed list of services in a fixed list of towns, checked monthly.
  • Organic calls and quote requests from your website, separated from paid traffic.

Here is why it's worth the wait. Suppose map results bring you 20 extra calls a month, you book half, and your average job is $900. That's $9,000 a month of work with no per-click cost. Compare that with the cost per booked job from paid advertising in your market, and the long-term value becomes clear. Our HVAC work shows what steady organic effort can do: Roma Heating & Cooling grew organic traffic 400% in 12 months.

Choosing which towns to target

Not every town in your service area deserves the same effort. We rank them with you on three things: how much work you want there, how far your crews will drive at a profit, and how crowded the map results already are. A suburb twenty minutes away with three strong competitors may be a worse target than a smaller town forty minutes out with nobody visible.

A practical rule: pick three to five priority towns, earn visibility there, then widen. Spreading thin across fifteen towns usually means ranking nowhere.

How local search differs by province

The basics are the same everywhere, but the details change. In Quebec, customers search in French and the Charter of the French Language shapes what your listings and website must offer. In the Prairies and the North, service areas are huge and proximity matters even more. Our areas pages cover what changes in each province.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Keyword-stuffed business names like "Smith Plumbing Best Plumber Toronto." It breaks Google's guidelines and invites suspension.
  • Fake or virtual addresses to appear in more cities.
  • Buying reviews, or offering discounts in exchange for them.
  • Duplicate profiles for the same location.
  • Ignoring the profile after setup. Inactive profiles drift down.

Frequently asked questions

How long does local search take to work?

Profile fixes can show results within weeks; competitive towns can take several months of steady work. Anyone who promises a fixed ranking by a fixed date is guessing.

Can I rank in a town where I don't have an address?

Google weighs proximity heavily, so ranking far from your verified location is hard. Service-area pages and reviews from that town help, but they can't override distance entirely.

Should I use a virtual office address to appear in more towns?

No. Google's guidelines don't allow it, and profiles built on virtual offices can be suspended. We work with your real location and service area.
